This is the long-awaited fourth volume of Michael Moorcock's Jerry Cornelius tetralogy, and it fulfils all his readers' high expectations. Complex in structure (it relates to the other volumes on a variety of levels), it is nonetheless as easy to read as the others. Fast, witty, original, funny and poignant, it concludes all the themes of the series, uniting it into one major novel dealing with most of the dilemmas and paradoxes of the present century. Mrs Cornelius, Frank and Catherine Cornelius, Major Nye, Una Persson, Bishop Beesley, Miss Brunner and all the other favourite characters are back in a novel which displays Moorcock's many gifts at their greatest force. It is undoubtedly his best book so far and the one which will establish him as a major literary talent. The final scenes, in which the harlequinade themes are explored and in which explanations are given, are a tour de force of brilliant and deeply moving writing.
