Synopsis

Carol Hogben's book, based on the retrospective exhibition of his work at the Victoria and Albert Museum, gives a fully representative record of Leach's output from before the First World War, when he began potting in Japan, up to the 1970s. Some two-thirds of the pots, drawings and engravings that were exhibited are reproduced - all of the 123 pots illustrated bearing Leach's personal mark. The illustrations are arranged in chronological order and they are complemented by a sequence of extracts from writings by and about Leach that chart the development both of his art and the ideas behind it.
