Here's how I announced the book to friends and colleagues:
The book tells the story of communications media past and present profiling key people, events and technologies of the past 300 years and offers scenarios of futures about 20 years hence. It's as much about ideas as technology and provides an introduction to the thinking of the info gurus and media theorists--both those who evangelize the new technologies and those who worry about them--including Marshall McLuhan, Vannevar Bush, John Perry Barlow, Nicholas Negroponte, Esther Dyson and others. Part of the assignment was to separate wherever possible the hype and extravagant predictions from the genuine promise and perils of our digital future. (if you read the book, please do drop me a line; email is below)
Explores the interrelationships among operations of cable and satellite television, computer networks, broadcast and cellular transmission, fiber optics, and other technologies.
