Distinguished biblical theologian John Goldingay explores what the Old Testament has to say about twenty-five important questions of the Christian faith, drawing practical, sensible applications for today's church. He writes in an engaging, conversational style and seeks biblical alternatives to the often polarized positions of Christian debates. Questions include:· Who Is God? · How Do God's Love and God's Wrath Relate to Each Other? · Does God Have Surprises? · What Does It Mean to Be Human? · Can We Make Sense of Death and Suffering? · What Is Sin? · What Is the People of God? (A Narrative Answer) · What Is the People of God? (An Answer in Images) · What Is a Covenant? · What Is the Meaning of Sacrifice? · Why Circumcision? · Should I Tithe Net or Gross? · Was the Holy Spirit Active in First Testament Times? · How Does Prayer Work? · What Is Israel's Place in God's Purpose? · Is Election Fair? · What Is the Relationship between Creation and Salvation? · How Does the First Testament Look at Other Religions? · Is Leadership Biblical? · Is God in the City? · Does God Care about Animals? · What Is a Family? · What Does the Bible Say about Women and Men? · What Might the Song of Songs Do for People? · How Should We Think about Same Sex Relationships? Old Testament professors and students, pastors, and educated lay readers will appreciate Goldingay's passion for his subject.

From the Back Cover:
In Key Questions about Christian Faith: Old Testament Answers, distinguished Old Testament scholar John Goldingay explores what the Old Testament has to say about twenty-five important questions that run the gamut from basic--"Who is God?" and "What does it mean to be human?"--to more practical concerns, such as "Should I tithe net or gross?" and "How does prayer work?" Contemporary hot topics also come in for treatment, ranging from "Does God care about animals?" to "What might the Song of Songs do for people?" which opens up a much neglected biblical book to address the sensitive subject of marriage and its sexuality.

In a single volume, Goldingay provides an accessible yet scholarly exploration of issues that are of as much concern today as they were in Old Testament times.

Advance Praise for Key Questions about Christian Faith

"At last! A book about the Old Testament that answers the questions that thinking Christians are actually asking. As an added bonus, unlike so many academic tomes on biblical theology, this is written in a straightforward and engaging style. The answers may not always be quite what one initially expects, but they are firmly grounded in a responsible analysis of the text, and they address many practical issues that are of current concern in the Western church. I cannot think of another scholar who could manage such a feat."--H. G. M. Williamson, Christ Church, University of Oxford

"Key Questions about Christian Faith is vintage Goldingay: biblical interpretation with theological interest and an ear attuned to contemporary life, transparent sharing of personal experiences, and a conversational voice. It is an enjoyable, illuminating, and thoroughly biblical guide to important questions of the Christian faith. I commend it highly."--Robert L. Hubbard Jr., North Park Theological Seminary

"Theological interpretation is beginning to rediscover the First Testament. In this intriguing book, one of evangelicalism's most mature biblical scholars applies his scholarly acumen to some of theology's most perplexing questions. Goldingay has inaugurated a new genre of theological literature that will be welcomed by thoughtful readers of every theological stripe. Every chapter is a goldmine."--Kenton L. Sparks, Eastern University
