From the Author

'We are told to forgive our enemies,
We are not told to forgive our friends.'
For years, even centuries, many small coastal villages in Kent and Sussex depended on smuggling for their prosperity. But when the Napoleonic wars ended the Government used returning ships-of-the-line and naval shore parties to combat the loss of revenue and in 1826 the Coastal Blockade was extended to Chichester. This took in the small village of Elswick and put landowner, Nicolas Mariott and smugglers' leader Joshua Ryland on opposite sides, disrupting a friendship that had stood unshaken for twenty years.

Coming as a stranger to Elswick, Elise Hilliard found herself drawn into a murderous situation as the quarrel between the two men deepened and darkened. Clear-eyed and courageous, she breaks both convention and the law to save the man she has come to love from himself and two young boys from possible tragedy.

Nick's patience broke. 'Damn you Josh - you're a fool! What I'd like at this moment is to up-end what's left in this pot over your stubborn head!'
'You'd be sorry.' Suddenly there was a distance between them that had never been there before. Then, with black and flagrant intent, Josh added, 'Great man though you be these days.'
Cold, savage rage blasted through Nick. In a voice that cut like a whip, he said, 'Never before have I thought of you as less than my equal, Joshua Ryland. More often than not, I have believed you the better man. I see now I was wrong on both counts.’
The pause was no longer than between the flash of a gun and the bullet striking home before Josh loomed to his feet, as lean, lithe and powerful as twenty years ago. Now a threat made visable, he laid his hands palm-down on the table as though to keep them from use. 'Damn you to hell! You've made clear where you stand and I've done the same.' His slight accent thickened to parody. 'What comes of that we'll need to abide. Won't we, Mister Mariott?' Turning about, he strode out of the inn.
