Anthea Cohen has established a considerable following for her beguiling Avenging Angels series, but Dream On represents a new direction for her. This psychologically fraught domestic mystery is filled with compelling detail in its treatment of the dark currents the human behaviour.

Elizabeth has always known that her daughter Nina bears her a barely-disguised enmity. Her attempts to stop the sexually provocative girl from ruining her own life are not aided by Nina's doting Father who is always ready to excuse her behaviour. Things get complicated when the police begin to look for arsonists who have torched the local school and Elizabeth begins to suspect that Nina is involved. But when a short while later she is expelled, and a second fire kills an ex-schoolteacher in her cottage, the narrative takes a highly unexpected turn--blackmail is added to the sinister mix.
Cohen writes in an unadorned prose that creates effects she's aiming for; no unnecessary frills: "Nina felt suddenly a surge of sexual desire. It wasn't Jacko who had brought this sudden feeling on. It was, Nina knew, the thought of fire, flames. 'Come on then, let's go upstairs'". Cohen's admirers will be pleased to see the brilliant narrative tricks of such earlier books as Destroying Angels transformed into this much darker subject.
