From the Author

A fresh look at the familiar Nelson story.
This books looks at two key events in Nelson's career: The Battle of Cape St Vincent (14 February 1797), when he played a major role in the British victory over the Spanish Grand Fleet; and the abortive attack on Santa Cruz de Tenerife (22-25 July 1797) when he suffered a bloody defeat and lost his right arm.

Based on new research in hitherto untapped contemporary British sources, and on new Spanish research on both battles, this book challenges some aspects of the traditional British accounts and, in particular, claims that Nelson's role in both events has been misrepresented in the past. It goes on to argue that the time has come to review Nelson's whole career in the light of all the new material that is emerging.

Over 50 illustrations and 6 new plans of the battles drawn especially for the book.
