This book calls for a new approach to poetry criticism. Eighteen brilliant essays offer challenging new theoretical approaches by examining the work of twentieth-century women poets. Poets covered include the most famous - Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Bishop, Jackie Kay, Liz Lochhead, Grace Nichols, Eavan Boland - and the more neglected such as Una Marson, Jean Binta Breeze, Lorine Niedecker and Denise Riley. The essays are grouped into six sections: women poets and modernism; the politics of place; (post)colonial contexts; the body; radical poetics; and reconfigurations; and within these areas, war poetry, Caribbean, Irish and Scottish women's poetry, birth poetry and science poetry are also discussed.

Never opened, Never owned, Never marked . 6 x 9 x 1" size; 320 pages with index . 20th Century Women Poets . 18 essays, demonstrating the need for a thorough reinvestigation of the frameworks within which poetry in general, and women's poetry in particular, is read and critiqued. Offers a series of challenging theoretical approaches to poetry, at the same time locating poets in relation to the specific cultural, geographical and literary histories that proceed or surround them . Chapters are arranged according to six main topics: Women Poets and Modernism; The Politics of Place; ( Post ) Colonial Contexts; The Body; Radical Poetics; and Reconfigurations . Within these sections, contributors discuss a range of poetry, including War poetry, Irish women's poetry, Scottish women's poetry, anthologies of birth poetry, Caribbean epic poetry, and science and poetry . Contemporary poets such as Eavan Boland, Jean Binta Breeze, Jackie Kay, Denise Riley, Liz Lochhead and Grace Nichols are also given detailed attention. Rather than trying to establish a separate female poetic tradition or a canon of female poets, the book demonstrates the need for a thorough reinvestigation of the frameworks within which poetry is read and critiqued, foregrounding gender alongside other relevant considerations.
