A children's tale of a bird's search for his identity set in a tropical rainforest.

From School Library Journal:

In this British import, a bird hatches from a fallen egg and is discovered by a passing frog, and the two search for the feathered creature's species. It can't hop, slither, or swim, so it can't be a frog, a snake, or a fish. A distant song inspires the bird to journey up a tree where it discovers its kinfolk and true identity--a bird of paradise. One misstep and it falls back to Earth, but the accident provides the opportunity to say goodbye to friends before he flies off into the wild blue yonder. If the plot sounds contrived and well worn, it is. Awkward narration and clumsy transitions do nothing to enliven the stilted story. Alborough's cartoon-style line-and-wash illustrations are playful, but also lack originality and polish. More successful animal stories of identity and self-acceptance include Eastman's Are You My Mother? (Random, 1960), Ron Maris' I Wish I Could Fly (Greenwillow, 1987), and James Howe's I Wish I Were a Butterfly (HBJ, 1987). --Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI

From Publishers Weekly:

Beaky is a confused little bird. He hatches on the forest floor, far away from his family, and can't figure out what he is. All he knows is that he can't compete with Snake for slithering (he's "too short") nor with Fish for swimming ("too fluffy"). One day, lured up a tree trunk by a compelling melody, he finds himself wandering high into the branches. Beaky is lonely and scared, until in the morning he hears the sound again. He finds it is coming from a grown-up verson of himself and discovers he is a bird . . . "a bird of Paradise." Cartoony illustrations of this expressive little bird are set in imaginative, verdant surroundings. It is an uplifting moment when Beaky discovers his true identity and soars above the treetops.
