Set in the late 18th century, this is the story of lovely, wild Helen Gloag, who flees Scotland and sets sail for the Colonies. En route her ship is captured by pirates, who sell Helen to a procuress in Morocco.

In Morocco she is discovered by the dwarf Microphilus, who runs the Emperor's harem and who knows immediately that Helen will appeal to his master. He takes her back to the harem where Helen enters a fantastical new world, luxurious and beautiful, but deceptively dangerous too. One of the Emperor's queens has just been dismissed, leaving a vacancy. Can Helen step into her shoes and become queen herself, or will someone within the harem prevent her?
