Review:
With such a provocative title, it comes as no surprise to discover that the author is the first to admit there is no "power" in negativity. Furthermore, our thoughts should be "open" rather than "positive". Tony Humphreys, a consultant clinical psychologist, highlights many areas that challenge present ideas in modern psychology. Humphreys illustrates from personal experience the merits of protective feelings, outlines areas of trauma and describes the ways in which he developed healing actions. On the basis of having searched for ways to understand and heal himself, he is better equipped to help others. The frequent use of bullet points throughout help to clarify these concepts. According to Humphreys, avoidance is the biggest tragedy "because it, more than all the other protective strategies, perpetuates the non-confrontation of your own vulnerabilities." A good indicator of inner security is the ability to focus on the present moment rather than the past or future. It is a truth universally acknowledged that the relationship we have with ourselves is the key to all other relationships and, as Humphreys points out, it is the only one that cannot be taken away.

This is not a light read and indeed is often profound. Unlike many other upbeat self-help books, The Power of Negative Thinking has an underlying intensity and compassion. It leaves the reader with a greater insight of how to both identify and handle challenging relationships. --Deborah King
