Moles, John. The French Defence Main Line Winawer. London, B.T. Batsford, 1975. 22.3cm x 14.5cm. xiii, 258 pages. 153 diagrams. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Endpaper inscribed by President A. Sutcliff to Joe Hooton, Captain of the Derbyshire Chess Association. Contemporary Chess Openings. This book is designed for players of average club level and above- even grandmasters will find the book useful. The author discusses in great details the strategic ideas behind the Winawer and explains exactly what each side should be aiming for in all the important lines. The questions of move-order is carefully examined- in many variations the selection of the right move-order will halve the amount of preparation required before the reader can confidently employ the system in practice. Many variations have been re-assessed as conventional theoretical judgments often derive from misconceptions of Black's purposes. The author divulges much analysis, and, with over 3,000 books and tournament bulletins from the 1860s to September 1974 having been sifted to provide the main body of the material, very little of significance can have been missed. Every World Champion has been involved in the 'Winawer controversy'. The defence's greatest exponenets have been Nimzowitsch, Botvinnik and Petrosian.
