Edmund Whitty, correspondent for The Falcon, specialises in reportage from the underworld. Following his investigations into the culpability of 'Chokee Bill' in The Fiend in Human, Whitty finds himself involved with a bizarre and sinister group who photograph dead children dressed as well-known real and fictional characters from the past, for example Ophelia floating down the river and the Lady of Shallot. One person tangentially involved with this strange crowd is an Oxford don in holy orders, who is particularly fond of small girls. His present obsession is with the prepubescent daughter of a local man, to whom he tells all kinds of fantastic and funny stories, but fortunately he holds himself in such control that he never touches her. A number of murders occur during Whitty's period of involvement with this set, and he finally manages to get to the bottom of things with the help of his old friend the Captain, a couple of strange gentlemen who have spent too long in India, and the enterprising young lady with whom the Oxford don is in love...

From the Publisher:
The new novel from the highly acclaimed author of The Fiend in Human.
From the Back Cover:
Victorian London. Fog bound, stinking, sinister. This is journalist Edmund Whitty’s world. He is a habitué of taverns and gaming dens. He has lost fortunes. And he can’t find a story. He is being scooped by his rivals and his creditors are closing in on him.

Spiritualism is the new fad. An American detective asks Whittyto unmask a fraudulent psychic. Whitty has no other options, but the séance doesn’t go to plan. Whitty hears the voice of his dead brother imploring him to rights the wrongs of his life.

Whitty finds himself on a dangerous adventure that will take him into the highest echelons of society, where the bizarre and the sordid are the everyday currency, where young lives are sacrificed at strange whims, where Whitty himself will not escape accusations of murder and terrible imprisonment.

‘Builds to a tense and riveting climax’ Publisher’s Weekly

'Superb scene-setting and ripe characterisation ... endlessly intriguing. This is a spectacle as well as a novel' Literary Review
