Over 50 borders and motifs include flowers, animals, wreaths, children, homes, birds, alphabets, zodiac designs, and Christmas themes. Mix and match them to have a one-of-a-kind original, or embroider the projects as is: a bluebell and ribbon panel, a yellow archangel with butterflies, a deer and woodland cushion, a poinsettia border, and many others.

There seems to be no end to the projects possible with embroidered borders and motifs. In the introductory chapter to her fifth book, Danish needleworker Lindberg lists at least two dozen items that use repetitive design, from an old-fashioned sampler to egg cozies and curtain tiebacks. And if that were not enough to whet a stitcher's appetite, she provides complete details for more than 50 cross-stitch patterns, including color photographs as well as charted graphs. Inserted in every section--borders, motifs, alphabets, the zodiac--is at least one full-fledged project combining patterns, along with two chapters devoted to holiday and "married" patterns of two-plus borders and motifs. No level of difficulty is indicated, but beginners will have little trouble following her simple, classic designs. Barbara Jacobs
