Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Revised and Enlarged Edition. First impression of the new edition, fully revised by Angela Carter. The book was originally published by Quartet Books in 1974. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. "D" ink stamp to bottom of text-block. Signs of a previous pencil price erased on the front free endpaper. No inscriptions. Paper stock slightly browned. No foxing. Pages clean. Spine tight. No inscriptions. ***In a near fine colour-illustrated dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing the publisher's original price of £10.95 net. Red to spine of dustwrapper slightly faded. No tears. Rear and front panels of dustwrapper bright and clean. ***120 pages. 242 mm x 162 mm. ***Short stories: A Souvenir of Japan; The Executioner's Beautiful Daughter; The Loves of Lady Purple; The Smile of Winter; Penetrating to the Heart of the Forest; Flesh and the Mirror; Master; Reflections; Elegy for a Freelance. ***Fireworks, first published in 1974, is a collection of nine bewitching, dangerous short stories. Some stunningly evoke real locations in which to depict the human dilemmas of life in great cities - Tokyo in the rain, or a London of seedy boarding houses. Others take us to imaginary landscapes of Angela Carter's own invention, jungles, forests and mountains, where human beings and animals take on striking, allegorical functions. ***The Executioner's Daughter' is set among wild mountain-dwellers who 'would, if they could, act out entire Wagnerian cycles of operatic evil and gleefully transform their villages into stages upon which the authentic monstrosities of Grand Guignol might be acted out in every unspeakable detail. Sixties London is the backdrop for a plot from Dostoevsky --- 'Master' plays out in the place where time runs back on itself. Elsewhere we meet motorcyclists 'as beautiful as the outriders of death', a puppet-master's femme-fatale doll filled with necromantic vigour, an ancient hermaphrodite knitting the thesis and antithesis together, and slipping a stitch. ***Sometimes beautiful, sometimes shocking, sometimes ironic, Angela Carter's stories all dazzle with their passion and ingenuity, and leave strange after-images in the mind.' ***First impression of the new edition, fully revised by Angela Carter, complete in its original dustwrapper, very hard to find in such nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 6793

Wild & Homeless Books
(Bridport, United Kingdom)

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Uncommon nowadays, a very good copy of the first edition of the fully revised Fireworks (1987). The book contains nine resonant stories originally written by Angela Carter between 1970 and 1973, all first published in bookform in 1974. This copy shows hardly any signs of shelfwear and handling. The bottom couple of millimetres of the spine are slightly pushed in and the top millimetre or so of the top edge of the blue boards is just a little bit less blue than the bottom edge. The pages inside the books are handsomely laid out though browned, because of the kind of paper that Chatto & Windus used back then. No markings to the text, and the book is still well-bound. The dust jacket has not been price-clipped, and likewise shows few signs of shelfwear and handling. The top back-left corner is slightly rubbed, there's a light crease across the top of the front cover and a short crinkle in the lamination, reaching down to the S of FIREWORKS. Otherwise there's just a few minor blemishes, for example a couple of short superficial creases near the top of the spine, if you look hard with a critical eye. The jacket is now in a smart protective sleeve. Please take a look at the photos supplied. And if you have any questions, please get in touch. Seller Inventory # 000762
