About the Author:
James Hogg (1770-1835) was born on his father's farm near Selkirk in the Scottish Borders. he left school for farm work at the age of seven and became a shepherd in his teens. Steeped in oral tradition he was determined to be a poet like Burns from an early age on. He became friends with Walter Scott and in 1810 he went to Edinburgh to seek a literary career. His most well-known work, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, made little impact when it first appeared (anonymously) in 1824. He continued to publish poetry and prose until his death in 1835.

Book Description hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 494pp. (black spine) 8vo. sized. 1972. First edition. A hardback copy with dust jacket. Original publisher's red boards - gilt embossed to the spine. A blue biro neat name and date to the upper corner of the front endpaper with a neat gift inscription in blue biro to the verso. A light bump to the tail of the spine. Some spotting to the fore-edges - most notable to the upper fore-edge. The jacket has not been price-clipped though the price has been largely obliterated in blue biro. There are strips of sellotape to the verso of the jacket at the head and tail of the spine, to the head of the front panel and to the tail of the rear flap presumably with a view to strengthening the jacket. The strip to the head of the front panel does 'repair' a very short tear. There is also some shelf wear and dust soiling to the rear panel. Seller Inventory # 024132
