Seller: COOK AND BAKERS BOOKS, PARKSVILLE, VANCOUVER ISLAND, BC, Canada
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Reading Copy. Black & White Photographs (illustrator). First American Edition. Ex-Library with usual Stamps Etc, otherwise very clean and well bound. 6 X 9" 294 pages. The Knox Brothers: Edmund (Evoe) Knox 1881 - 1971; Dillwyn Knox 1883 - 1943; Wilfred Knox 1886 - 1950; Ronald Knox 1888 - 1957. Ronald Knox, translator of the Bible and brilliant spokesman for Catholicism, is the best-known of the four brothers, but all were remarkable men. The sons of an Evangelical Bishop of Manchester, they shared a common passion for poetry, puzzles, trains and the truth. Eddie was a wit, editor of Punch and a scintillating writer of verse. It was Dillwyn's genius and leaps of intuition that broke the crucial German flag-code in WWI and shortened by 6 months the struggle to solve Enigma in the Second. Wilfred, who had been the dandy of the family as a young man, became an Anglo-Catholic priest and an active welfare worker in the East End of London. Penelope Fitzgerald, the author, is the daughter of Eddie ('Evoe' of Punch). Seller Inventory # 21239
