He went on to earn his Ph.D. in religion and imaginative literature at the University of Chicago, taught at Albion College for 28 years, and spent the next 14 years as a community volunteer. In 2009 he and his wife moved to Silver Maples in Chelsea, Michigan where most of these poems were written.When asked, Stohl said he wrote poems "to quiet the inconvenient urgings of his muse.".
