With its warm, cheerful illustrations, Maryann Kovalski's buoyant story is a treat for pizza lovers of all ages. From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- "Be careful what you wish for" is the message in this rollicking picture book. Frank and Zelda, a warm and comfortable pair, own a busy pizza parlor next to a hat and glove factory. Even though Zelda foresees the changing times, they never come up with an alternate plan--until it is too late. The factory closes, business dies, and Frank and Zelda long for the good old days. A mysterious little man appears one day and grants them a wish in exchange for a pizza. "A paying customer . . . No, make it a thousand--every day and forever," is Frank's sole desire. When the hungry droves materialize, his dream becomes a nightmare. He asks for help, and the next day "hundreds of smiling waiters" arrive. And so it goes until, of course, he wishes for it all to be the way it was. When things return to normal, he and Zelda formulate a plan: a small pizza truck that they can drive onto the beach where they can relax between customers. With its plaid tablecloth endpapers and round-faced characters racing through its pages, this book is pure fun. The familiar, albeit slightly truistic, theme is well done, with good-humored text and lively watercolor illustrations that produce a story that's sure to please. --Jane Marino, White Plains Public Library, NY

From Publishers Weekly:

Well matched in appearance and temperament, Frank and Zelda are a team in business as well. They work hard, sell a lot of pizza and complain mightily about aching feet and an overheated kitchen--until the factory across the street goes belly-up and leaves them without a lunch crowd. Soon there is nothing to do but look at each other, and the couple realize how little they appreciated the good old days. A fairy in unlikely garb gives the two of them a chance to turn their misfortune around. Kovalski's ( The Wheels on the Bus ; Jingle Bells ) roly-poly characters are boldly drawn in homey and humorous strokes. With its mom-and-pop business setting, her droll tale is a splendid example of what can happen when you get what you wish for (and maybe what you wanted was right there all along). Ages 5-up.
