Synopsis

Alan Sherwood depends on the simple routine of his life: breakfast at the same coffee shop, a stable law practice with is oldest friend, and his kind mother's understated devotion. Then a short and passionate affair with the elusive Sarah Miller, who suddenly leaves him without a word, forces Alan to realize that routine and order are not enough. Feeling solitary and shocked by the late remarriage of his mother, he submits to an engagement to fragile, needy Angela. She sees in him a protector, one who will confer stability and respect upon her, yet he is haunted by memories of Sarah Miller, and of more carefree times in Paris. When Sarah re-enters his life, Alan embarks on an act of betrayal, the tragic consequences of which change his life forever. Alone in the Swiss border town of Vif, Alan endeavors to reconcile his feelings of guilt and sadness, and to make amends for the mistakes of his life.

About the Author:

Anita Brookner was born in London and, apart from several years in Paris, has lived there ever since. She trained as an art historian and taught at the Courtauld Institute of Art until 1988.
