During the Second World War he served as chief medical officer with the Russian partisan unit 'Sovyetskaya Beloruss'. In June 1944 Dr Berk joined the Polish Army and served until the end of the war when he emigrated to Israel. As a general surgeon and head of the Maxillo-Facial Unit in Tel-Hashomer Hospital, he finished his military service with the rank of Major. In 1956 Dr Berk emigrated to Australia.
