About the Author:

C.A. Bayly is Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St Catherine s College, Cambridge. He has held visiting positions in France and the United States and regularly visits India and Southeast Asia. His previous publications include Imperial Meridian: The British Empire and the World 1780-1830 (1989), Indian Society and the Making of the British Empire (1988) and Empire and Information (1996).
