Lee Nailing was a 7 yrs old when his mother died, in 1924, Then he was called Alton Lou Clement, he was the middle of seven children. After a few months his father couldn't cope and told the oldest 3 that they would have to leave home, gave the baby away and Gerald [age 1] to someone else and took the himself and Leo to Jefferson County Orphan Asylum. in New York. 2 yrs later he was put on the orphan train (to a better life!). His father arrived at the station with Gerald (now 3)to be sent with the 2 boys and a pink envelope with which to write to his father when settled with a family. This was removed from his pocket while asleep, as the plan was to give them new families when they got to Texas.
