Intersection homology theory is one of the new developments in mathematics. It is proving itself to be a very powerful tool in the study of singular spaces and has close links with many different areas of mathematics, including among others the theory of differential equations, group representations and number theory. The aim of this Research Note is to give an elementary introduction to intersection homology theory accessible to any mathematician with an interest in the topology of singular spaces. The emphasis is therefore on introducing and explaining the main ideas, so difficult proofs of important theorems are omitted or merely sketched. The areas dealt with in the book include algebraic topology, algebraic geometry, representation theory and differential equations.
