Synopsis

Tim and Tobias is another name for the "Flightpath to Reading" Series by Sheila K. McCullagh. Written in the 1980's, Tim, a young boy, finds a key that lets him see a world of Hidden People where magic exists. With his friend the black cat Tobias, who can fly broomsticks, he embarks on a series of adventures. Flightpath to Reading was a series of children's books designed to get young children interested in reading. Also called "Tim and Tobias" and "Tim and the Hidden People" they were written by Sheila K. McCullagh, who also wrote Puddle Lane, and the series proved exceptionally popular. Tim is a young boy who discovers that with the help of a mysterious key he can see things others can't. This brings him into the world of the Hidden People, people who are invisible to most others, and into a series of adventures. Tobias, the black cat, is his first friend, who teaches him to fly a broomstick, and introduces him to misadventures such as an invisible trip to the fair. However, among the society of the Hidden People, there are dangers such as Wild Witches, Stone men and Stump People, and as he spends longer in their world Tim makes enemies as well as allies. Even his friends prove difficult when the Hidden People, having been driven out of their own home, move into his normal friend Arun's house. As Tim makes more friends, normal and hidden, the crossover between the worlds becomes more complex, culminating in four novels. There were four series of books, labelled A-D. The early books are easier to read and the later series become more challenging. It was designed with an ongoing storyline that would draw children into trying the more complex later books to see how the story ends. Following these were four additional stand alone novels, usually refered to as Series E.
