This personal guide to the author's favourite French food lists those ingredients and methods of cooking which are quintessentially French. Interspersed with recipes and anecdotes, this fully illustrated book also introduces the reader to the French way of shopping, cooking and dining. Len Deighton is perhaps best known for his spy thrillers such as "The Ipcress File" and "The Billion Dollar Brain". His first collection of French recipes was "Ou est le Garlic?" (reissued as "Basic French Cooking").

An unexpected offering to be sure, but Deighton's guide to French food turns out to be as engrossing as his spy novels. Deighton is in fact the author of a cookbook, Ou Est le Garlic? ; now, in his personal Larousse , he discourses on ingredients and techniques, chefs and restaurants, the Michelin guides, food fads, and more. His amusing, opinionated text is both informative and entertaining; even the bibliography is fun to read. Recommended.
