This is a novel of love and adventure based on the village of Ahamad, situated at the edge of the desert on the banks of the Nile. There the brothers Duschea and Ahamad Maland--orphaned by the cruel desert--wander in search of food and shelter until they are rescued from their wretched, hopeless poverty by Mother Maltretia. She takes them into her home, Beuminchen, and becomes their foster mother. They are entrusted to the care of Keawanta, a valued household servant, who teaches the boys the secrets of the desert.
