From the Back Cover:

Autumn 1934...Strolling through the Paris streets, Dr Jacob Jardine glimpses a figure from deepest imaginings: Sylvie Kowalska, half temptress, half innocent. Despite himself, he is drawn into a troubled world in which the past haunts the present. A world which casts Sylvie first as the darling of bohemian Paris and, when war erupts, as a fearless member of the Resistance. Thriving on danger, she weaves a web of memory and desire entangling lives across two generations and two continents.

Spring 1980...Alexei Gismondi is trailing an elegant woman in the New York rain. Katherine Jardine has cast off her European heritage and Alexei’s intrusion into her life forces her to face a past – and a mother – she would rather forget. Alexei is obsessed with a mystery to which he is certain Katherine holds the key. But at its centre is the enduring enigma of Sylvie...
