The middle decades of the twentieth century saw an extraordinary flourishing of the illustrated, pictorial dust jacket. From the 1920s, as the potential for the book's protective wrapping to be used for promotion and enticement became clear, artists and illustrators on both sides of the Atlantic applied their talents to this particular art form. Rising to the wide-ranging challenges posed by format and subject matter, leading artists and illustrators, including John Piper, Edward Bawden and John Minton in the UK and Ben Shahn, Edward Gorey and George Salter in the USA, brought their unique personal vision to bear on the world of books.

Many of their designs reflect the changing visual styles and motifs of the period, including Bloomsbury, Art Deco, Modernism, postwar neo-romanticism and the Kitchen Sink School. Martin Salisbury has selected over fifty of the artists and illustrators who were active in the period 1920-1970 in the UK and USA, as well as others such as Tove Jansson and Celestino Piatti, and discusses their life and work. A selection of dust jackets - both known and too long forgotten - for each artist reveals how far the book as an artefact had travelled from the days of the plain wrapper in the nineteenth century.

Review:

Salisbury's book shows that the greatest jackets tint our experiences of the books they grace. He guides us with easy authority through a delightful graphic history of all-too-often underappreciated literary pleasures and reminds readers just how much wonderful art they may have hidden away on their shelves. For those who never paused to think much about jackets, this book will be a revelation. For those who do, it will be nothing less than a thrill.

The dust jacket doffed and donned in the 20th century...There is a glorious cast of subjects ripe for rediscovery--The Art Newspaper

A delightful, deeply learned anthology--John Sutherland, Literary Review

Irresistibly nostalgic --Observer, Books of the Year

Gorgeous...Dust jackets are an underrated art--The Oldie

The Illustrated Dust Jacket, 1920-1970 by Martin Salisbury, chronicles how this once disposable object became a major creative force in publishing.

Evocative --Choice

A sheer delight--Yorkshire Post

Sumptuous...drips with period flavour and shows how false the distinction between fine and applied art can be--Michael Prodger's Books of the Year,
New Statesman

The richest feast for the eye, garnished with sharp learning--John Sutherland's Books of the Year, The Spectator

Lushly illustrated, Salisbury's exciting visual history showcases the work of Edward Gorey, Vanessa Bell, Alvin Lustig, and many others.

A celebration of book art at a time when book covers are more vital than ever...a beautiful book, about beautiful books --Caught by the River

From the Back Cover:

A deep dive into the history of the illustrated book jacket, tracing its development across the twentieth century, reflecting some of the most iconic designs of the era

In the modern era, the "beautiful book," an art object in its own right, has become the key to the ongoing attraction of print publishing as physical books continue to distinguish themselves from the screen.

Author Martin Salisbury traces the evolution of the book jacket from its functional origins as a plain dust protector for expensively bound books to its elaboration as an artistic device to catch the eye of browsing book buyers. The increasing awareness of the jacket's potential to serve as a marketing tool across various areas of the publishing world?from literary fiction to academic titles, and children's books?meant a proliferation of illustrative treatments. The book jackets reproduced here reflect the changing visual styles and motifs of the passing century, beginning with the Art Deco period and continuing through Modernism, the playful Thirties, the pre- and postwar Neo-Romantics, the new consumerism and realist subject matter of the Fifties, and the Pop Art of the Sixties.

Featuring talent from the US and UK, Cover Up: The Illustrated Book Jacket explores the pictorial dust jacket through a selection of more than 300 key works and artists that influenced the course of book jacket design.
