CALIFORNIA: THE POLITICS OF DIVERSITY, 6E, is a comprehensive text that explores the uniqueness and excitement of California's political environment through two key themes: diversity and hyperpluralism. An experienced educator with a background in local government, Lawrence brings an informed, insightful perspective to the examination of the numerous pressures that make governing the state increasingly challenging. To help readers better understand California politics in a national context, the text also discusses aspects of American politics such as the democratic, elite, and pluralist theories and shows how those concepts can aid in understanding California politics.

"An excellent text which clearly provides a helpful explanation of how CA politics works--i.e., the politics of diversity--and does so in a way that hold students' attention and leaves them with a political understanding that they can take with them the rest of their lives."
"I truly cannot come up with even one weakness. . . . [T]he Lawrence text is the best I have seen."
"The most cogent and in-depth of the California politics texts on the market. It explicitly incorporates diversity and hyperpluralism as organizing perspectives. It is readable and reasonably priced."
"The textbook is very clearly written, covers the essentials and more of California government, and is one of only a few on the market that incorporates significant policy content."
"An introductory California politics text that students like to read."
