Excerpt from The First Six Books of Virgil's Aeneid: With Introduction, Notes and Vocabulary
In the firm conviction that we have gone too far in the marking of quantities in our latter-day text-books, and that it is time to call a halt, at least in poetry, the quantities have been marked only in the Vocabulary. To try to teach boys to scan by presenting them with marked quantities in the text is about as reasonable as to try to teach them to translate by the use of interlinear translations. The only way to make a hard thing easy is by hard work; and to avoid the water is not the best way to learn how to swim.
