Synopsis
This teaching manual presents reading and writing from a middle school and secondary school perspective. The major focus of the text is on classroom instruction, and it aims to give teachers sound, theory-based instructional strategies for increasing their teaching effectiveness and developing their students' literacy/learning abilities. Topics discussed include: co-operative learning; portfolio assessment; reading and writing across the curriculum; thematic instruction and learned instruction across subject areas; developing lifelong readers and writers; second language learning; giftedness; and gender differences. Throughout the text, attention is given to issues of cultural and language diversity and the changing needs of middle school and secondary school populations.

About the Author
Martha Ruddell is Professor of Education and a member of the Curriculum Studies and Secondary Education department at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California. In addition to this text, Dr. Ruddell is the co–editor of Theoretical Models and Processes of Reading, and has published numerous articles for professional journals, including Reading Online. Dr. Ruddell is Past President of the National Reading Conference, and in 1996 she was elected to membership in the California Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame.
