This study suggests that the NHS and its patients are suffering as a result of the way private medicine is conducted in Britain. It examines issues such as: the variations in waiting time for operations in the private sector and the NHS; the amount of time NHS consultants spend in the private sector; whether there is apathy, cover-up or misplaced concern in relation to consultants' NHS contracts; whether surgeons practice in an evidence-based way; the level of operative workload in the NHS; and discussion over the possible improvements of the equality of access to health care in the UK.
