Synopsis

This well established book provides a thorough explanation of all aspects of current pile design and construction techniques. It is an essential handbook for engineers responsible for designing and constructing piled foundations for buildings and civil engineering structures. General principles and practices of piling are explained followed by a detailed review of the types of pile, piling equipment and methods which are currently used. Design of piles is covered by four chapters dealing with calculating the resistance of piles to compressive loads, pile groups under compressive loading, piled foundations for resisting uplift and lateral loading and structural design of piles and pile groups. The last four chapters deal with piling for marine structures, miscellaneous piling problems (machinery foundations, underpinning, mining subsidence areas, frozen ground), durability of piled foundations and site investigations, piling contracts and pile testing. The book is illustrated by nearly 400 photographs and diagrams. It includes 35 worked examples, many of which are based on actual problems encountered in practice, and many tables and references.
