Synopsis:
This volume seeks to inspire and guide academic and general managers alike, working in higher and further education. Peter McCaffery is a senior manager in higher education. Based on his experiences and on his research into HEI management in the UK and the US, the text examines the particular set of challenges facing anyone managing - or moving into management - in this complex environment. It addresses both the difficulties of managing in a sector traditionally hostile to over-management on the one hand, and the risks of out-moded approaches on the other. Topics covered include: the HE context and challenge; knowing your institution; leading departments; managing for performance and change in education.

He has over 25 years of teaching and management experience, working in a range of institutions from Ivy League Universities to further education colleges.
