Synopsis:
William Shakespeare and Aphra Behn are at opposite ends of this spectrum. Shakespeare is the supreme example of a 'canonical' author whose works have been acclaimed for centuries, whereas Behn - the first professional woman writer, and tremendously popular in the seventeenth century - has been largely ignored until recently. Shakespeare, Aphra Behn and the Canon is a lucid introduction to the idea of the canon, exploring the complex processes by which certain writings, and not others, achieve a high cultural status, and examining why the very concept of the canon is now being challenged. The authors provide detailed study of three of Shakespeare's best-known plays - Henry V, Othello and As You Like It - and Behn's Restoration comedy The Rover . No previous knowledge of either Shakespeare or Behn is assumed: the reader is offered practical exercises in analysing key passages of text and criticism, and particular attention is paid to the plays' performance histories. The text of The Rover is included here, fully modernized and with explanatory notes.
