Miss Read's first novel, Village School, was published in 1955, and her last book, A Peaceful Retirement, in 1996. In between, she has written over forty books, the majority of which feature either the village of Fairacre or Thrush Green. She and her husband live near Hungerford in Berkshire.
JUNE WHITFIELD is one of Britain's leading comedy actresses, and is best known for her television performances in Terry and June and Absolutely Fabulous.
