A witty, lively study of sex in the 1990s sheds new light on the complexities and confusions of intimate relationships in modern America, in a tantalizing collection of real-life experiences and reminiscences.

The Nineties are a difficult time to have a sexual life; Courtney Weaver's snapshots from the front line demonstrate that the only thing you can be sure of is that people will gamble with their own happiness and that of those around them. Jemma leaves her husband to be the submissive of a master; Nigel deceives his fianceé for a plump American who jumps on him in the kitchen. Pregnant Marie goes off sex temporarily and tells her husband to look elsewhere, as a way of ensuring he does not--but he does, and she finds she minds a lot: " 'I said he could have an affair,' she spat out.' I didn't say he could fucking fall in love. I didn't say he could sneak around behind my back! "
A mixture of memoir, meditative polemic about sexual behaviours and good old-fashioned gossip, Unzipped raises important questions about freedom and what men and women do with it. It is a book about running your personal life with e-mail and mobile phones and about using food and exercise as substitutes for love. Courtney Weaver's cosmopolitan, high-stress life style in San Francisco has enough in common with life elsewhere that much of what she says has resonance, even when she is moralising.--Roz Kaveney
