Les écrivains de notre temps qui se sont occupés de l'ora toire enseignant en ont parlé, presque exclusivement, d'après les Entretiens sur les sciences du P. Lamy, la Méthode d'étudier et d'enseigner chrétiennement les humanités du P. Thomassin, la Notice sur le collège de Juilly du P. Adry.
Malgré la haute valeur des ouvrages qui leur ont servi de guides, nous ne croyons pas qu'ils soient arrivés complètement àla vérité. Les pp. Lamy et Thomassin songeaient plutôt à exposer dans leurs livres leurs projets de réforme et leurs réflexions personnelles sur l'enseignement, qu'à se faire les rapporteurs fidèles de ce qui se passait, de leur temps, dans les collèges de leur ordre. Ils ont peint, si l'on veut, l'oratoire tel qu'il aurait dû être, mais non pas tel qu'il a été. Quant au P. Adry, il a écrit sur Juilly une notice qui a le défaut d'être trop courte et de ressembler parfois à un panégyrique.
