This work examines fundamental issues for religious education, such as how far it is possible to understand someone else's religious position and how religions should be interpreted in the classroom. It gives an overview of some important developments in religious education since the 1970s and makes suggestions about how we should "interpret" religion.

This was my first opportunity to articulate the interpretive approach in some detail, linking it to ethnographic research with children, to the development of curriculum materials based on ethnographic studies and to issues about covering religions as part of public education in democratic societies. It was misread by some as presenting the approach to religious education. This was never the intention, as is made clear in the book itself!About the Author:
Robert Jackson is Professor of Education at the University of Warwick, was founding Director of Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit (1994-2012), and is Professor of Religious Diversity and Education at the Council of Europe-related European Wergeland Centre in Oslo. He was Editor of the British Journal of Religious Education 1996-2012. In 2013 he received the William Rainey Harper Award from the Religious Education Association (USA), presented to 'outstanding leaders whose work in other fields has had profound impact upon religious education'.
