This commentary, like each in the series, is designed to serve readers by demonstrating the continuing intellectual and practical viability of theological interpretation of the Bible. Figures of the classical church such as Augustine, Calvin, Luther, and Wesley interpreted the Bible theologically, believing Scripture as a whole witnessed to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Modern interpreters of the Bible questioned this premise. About the Author

Dr Matthew Levering is Associate Professor of Theology at Ave Maria University. He is widely published with his latest work Participatory Biblical Exegesis: A Theology of Biblical Interpretation appearing in 2007. He is an associate editor of Sapientia Press, and the founding co-editor of the English version of the philosophical and theological quarterly Nova et Vetera. He holds the M.T.S. from Duke Divinity School and the Ph.D. from Boston College.
