An ambitious young man, Michael Henchard regards his wife and young daughter as nothing more than crushing burdens he must carry through life. One evening, in a drunken auction at a hiring fair, he sells them to a sailor for five guineas. The years pass. Henchard's fortunes prosper and he becomes the much-respected Mayor of Casterbridge. At the height of his success, however, his wife and daughter reappear, setting off a chain of events which undermine his power and reputation, bringing him finally to ruin and despair. Sub-titled 'A Story of a Man of Character', The Mayor of Casterbridge chronicles the life of one of Hardy's most powerful character-creations - 'a blundering Titan of a self-made man'.
