This is the third volume of the Landscapes of Britain A series of regional studies which aims to analyse the development, from a physical and historical viewpoint, of the scenery of the British Isles. The present book deals with that part of South- East England lying closest to London, a region deeply affected by the growth of the city. In the first part of the book there is a long introductory essay which outlines the landscape history of the region. The east-west geological outcrops, ranging from the sandstones of the Inner Weald, the clays of vales like Holmesdale and the chalk which .forms the North Downs, give rise to distinctive tracts of country whose main features are analysed in detail. The distinctive elements of the climate of the area and the marked local effects of the London conurbation are then considered. The important role of prehistory, particularly the Iron Age, in establishing the features of the present landscape is discussed. Experiments in the making of towns, some of which succeeded while others failed, forms an important theme in a region that ultimately was overshadowed by the expansion of London. The second part of the book consists of twelve local studies chosen to illustrate aspects of the region in depth. Drainage evolution as exemplified by the history of the Wey and Mole rivers and the vegetation changes on Blackdown are predominantly physical studies while the inter-relationship of geology and settlement history is treated in a transect from the Weald to the Thames. The regional diversity of the South East is expressed in the studies of town as varied as Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Guildford, Farnham, Reigate, Greenwich and Crawley. Distinctive sub-regions like the Hoo Peninsula, Darent Valley and Ashdown Forest reveal some of the rich character of an area which is so frequently typified as "Suburbia'. Size: 4to.
