Moses Mendelssohn had six children who survived him, three sons and three daughters. Abraham, the second son, the father of Felix Mendelssohn, was born on the 11th of December 1776 Some years after his father's death he went to Paris, where he ultimately became cashier in Fould's bank. In 1804 he settled in Hamburg as a banker in partner ship with his elder brother Joseph; and in the same year he married Lea Salomon, who, like himself, was of Jewish birth, and a native of Berlin. They had four children - Fanny C'acilie (nov. 14, Jakob Ludwig Felix (feb. 3, Rebecka (april 11, and Paul (oct. 30, The children were brought up as Christians, and received, in addition to the name of Mendelssohn, that of Bartholdy, which had been adopted by their mother's brother. In the end Abraham Mendelssohn and his wife were themselves admitted into the Christian Church.
