Excerpt from Atala and René: Edited With Introduction and Notes
It is noteworthy that an increased admiration for Chateaubriand has been evinced in France within recent years, and the belief is justified that an edition of the Atala and René may stimulate a renewed inter est in the author among teachers and students in this country.
The text used in the present volume has been taken from the octavo edition published by Garnier Freres, and the older orthography in oi, as there given, has been preserved. A few slight corrections have been found necessary, some minor changes in punctuation have seemed advisable, and such brief omissions have been made in the subject-matter as our classroom standards would suggest.
As it is assumed that the study of Chateaubriand will be taken up with advanced students, it is for such that this edition has been prepared. Hence in the matter of annotation fullness has not been aimed at, and little or no grammatical assistance has been given. For the same reason the editor has felt free to quote, in Intro duction or Notes, short critical or explanatory passages in the original French.
In preparing the introductory material upon the life and works of Chateaubriand, the' biography by De Lescure in the Collection des Grands Ecrivains fran cais has proved a most valuable guide. In other por tions of the Introduction and Notes the editor has been indebted also to the critical works of Faguet, Pellissier, sainte-beuve and others.
