Excerpt from A Consideration of the Causes of Insanity
The following pages can claim to be little more than the merest outline of a study of the causes of insanity. More than this would be impossible within the limits of an ordi nary paper. A close analysis of the subject would require a consideration of the entire life of the Nineteenth Century, with a view of ascertaining those influences which have combined to produce a type of man so often unequal to the struggle for existence, and that, too, when the surroundings for mental health seemed fairly favorable.
I have been led to view the causes of insanity from a general rather than from a constricted point of view, because the latter field has been already pretty thoroughly worked. And, after all, to go back only so far as the immediate cause, is (in the case of a condition of disease, or mental and bodily alienation, like that of insanity) little more than reaching a remote effect or a group of symptoms; it is not touching bottom, nor getting at the true source.
