Just browsing through its entries can provide fascinating sidelights on many aspects of eighteenth-century life: standards of literary criticism, attitudes toward women as well as women's attitudes, morality, philosophy and politics, taste in fiction and poetry, inquiring interest in everything from transparent flies to `a tale of turd.'
