Review

"The Devoy story, in Terry Golway's hands, combines wide scholarship and adventure: it reads like a novel. Get a comfortable chair when you read this book: you won't be able to out it down." --Frank McCourt"Terry Golway has produced a well-researched biography of a man whose life has hitherto been given too little attention." --David Murray, The New Times Book Review"Terry Golway tells the story of this exceptional man with affection and a deft narrative sense. In an era of publishing in which America is rediscovering its Irishness, this book will charm and enlighten readers." --Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler's List The Devoy story, in Terry Golway's hands, combines wide scholarship and adventure: it reads like a novel. From the Author

A response to a reader's review
If the reader / critic quoted elsewhere would please be so kind as to write to St. Martin's, I would be glad arrange for a refund. I wouldn't want to benefit financially from such an individual. Many of the phrases he / she objects to were quoted from John Devoy's letters -- he was characterizing his enemies, and often they were not British, but Irish! (The reader says nothing of the many positive, and indeed heroic, aspects of Devoy's life that are recorded in this book, including his stage-managing of an overseas rescue and his financing of the Easter Rebellion -- and his support for the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The reader / critic complains about my sources, suggesting they are insufficiently nationalist. I suppose he missed the citations of works by the likes of O'Donovan Rossa, Woodham-Smith, Tim Pat Coogan, Desmond Ryan, Sean Cronin ... well, sometimes people see only what they choose to so. Glad to read that he /she found the book readable.
