About the Author

Asa Briggs was born in 1921 at Keighley, Yorkshire, and was educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge where he received a double first in history. He also received a first-class honours degree in economics from London University. Professor Briggs' main field of historical research is nineteenth-century social and cultural history, on which he has written extensively. His works include 'Victorian Cities', 'Victorian Things' and 'The Age of Improvement'.
