Book Description Charles Skilton, Cheddar, Somerset, 1987. Hardback. Condition: Almost as New. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Willey, Joseph (illustrator). First Edition. Looks unused to inside; clean and tight. D/j not price clipped and has one and a half inch tear to bottom front right edge. The photographer, a modest and uncomplicated family man, has not been credited with any mention in photographic reference books or journals, yet he was a devoted craftsman and his output was prolific. Originally influenced by Louis Daguerre he soon adopted easier methods. This book, portraying photographs which had not previously been published, documents a sleepy Victorian Lincolnshire wold town and its inhabitants. Many of their present-day descendants will hail it with delight, but its interest will be much wider, for it is a genuine and completely new contribution to Victoriana and to the history of photography. Book Description Charles Skilton, 1987. Green Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Minimal wear, pages clean, binding excellent. Victorian England was a phenomenon without parallel: the great success story of this country through the centuries. In many ways the present is grreatly indebted to those vigorous and enterprising mercantile and municipal pioneers whose works still often robustly survive. Although their era may have vanished, the way the Victorians behaved, their attitudes and outlook on life has markedly left its influence on today's world. Here is a unique collection of photographs depicting a prim and respectable society with its prosperity and its industry, which only a hundred years ago was flourishing and yet today seems very remote. The chance resurrection of these pictures from the plates of Joseph Willey is a real find in photographic history, for some were nearly consigned to the incinerator before David Cuppleditch diligently assembled them. The photographer, a modest and uncomplicated family man, has not been credited with any mention in photographic reference books or journals, yet he was a devoted craftsman and his output was most prolific. Although originally influenced by Louis Daguerre, Willey soon adopted easier methods of taking pictures. Like many 19th century men, his interests were varied, yet he never neglected his art and was a professional photographer throughout his adult life. This book, portraying photographs of which none have been published before, documents a sleepy Victorian Lincolnshire wold town and its inhabitants. Many of their present-day descendants will hail it with delight, but its interest will be much wider, for it is a genuine and completely new contribution to Victoriana and to the history of photography. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Seller Inventory # 001067
